Blue Rose Auto FAQ, Answers Before You Book

Blue Rose Auto repairs, details and protects cars, trucks and RVs from our shop on Olympic Street in Springfield, Oregon. These are the questions people usually ask before they bring a car in, answered the way we would answer them at the counter.

Visiting Our Springfield, OR Shop

Start with the basics. If your question isn't covered here, call (541) 641-8877 and whoever picks up the phone at the counter will answer it for you.

When is Blue Rose Auto open?

Blue Rose Auto is open Monday to Friday from 8 to 5 and Saturday from 10 to 5. We're closed on Sundays. If getting away from work during the week is hard, Saturday is the day to bring the car in.

Where is the shop, and how far is it from Eugene?

We're at 3436 Olympic St, Springfield, OR 97478, and from downtown Eugene the drive is about 7 road miles, roughly 15 minutes heading east on I-105.

Can I book online?

Yes. Our booking form asks for your vehicle and what's going on with it, and we get back to you to set a time. If you'd rather talk it through, call (541) 641-8877.

How soon can you look at my car?

It depends. Call, and we'll give you the soonest opening we have. Smaller jobs like brakes, a battery or an oil service are often done the same day, usually in one to two hours once we start. A collision repair or a coating job keeps the car longer, and we give you a realistic time up front.

Is Blue Rose Auto the same business as Blue Rose Detail?

Yes. Blue Rose Auto opened in 1994 as Blue Rose Detail in Junction City and grew into the full-service auto shop we run in Springfield today. Some directories still list the old name, Blue Rose Auto Detail. If you've seen both, they're us.

How do I choose a mechanic in Eugene or Springfield?

Ask before you hand over the keys. Find out whether the technicians are ASE certified, whether you get the price before any work starts, and what the warranty covers in miles and years, because a shop that can't answer all of that plainly is telling you something. Here, our technicians are ASE certified. You get the price first. The warranty runs 3 years or 36,000 miles. Then read what local customers say in our Google reviews.

What does Blue Rose Auto work on?

Blue Rose Auto handles mechanical repair, collision and body repair, detailing, ceramic coating, paint protection film, window tint and vehicle wraps. We also work on RVs, boats and trailers and bring cars back after mold and rodent damage. Daily drivers, pickups, work vans and EVs all come through the shop.

What should I take out of my car before I drop it off?

Take out valuables, garage remotes, loose papers and car seats if you can. A clear floor and empty seats let us reach the carpet, the seat tracks and the trim without moving your things around.

How a Visit Usually Goes

  1. Call us or send the booking form, and we set a time.
  2. We look at the car. If we find the problem in the first 15 minutes, that look costs nothing.
  3. We tell you what we found and what the repair will cost.
  4. We do the work you approve, and only that work.
  5. You pick up the car and we walk you through what we did.

Pricing, Diagnosis and Quotes

Money questions deserve plain numbers. Nobody likes guessing.

How much does a diagnosis cost at Blue Rose Auto?

The first 15 minutes are free. If we find the problem in that time, you pay nothing for the diagnosis. After that, diagnostic time is $100 an hour. That charge comes off your bill when you approve the repair, so you aren't paying twice to find and fix the same problem.

Will you start work before I approve it?

No. We tell you what we found and what the repair costs. The work starts when you say yes. Some jobs bill by the hour, like fitting aftermarket parts or a custom install. On those, ask us for the low and the high hour count before we start, and write both numbers down.

How much does auto repair usually cost?

Most repairs in Springfield land between $150 and $900, depending on the part and the vehicle. An oil change or brake pads sit at the low end, and alternators, A/C work and transmission jobs sit higher. We find the cause first, then give you the price for your car before any work starts.

How much does collision repair cost?

Minor collision damage typically runs $500 to $1,500, moderate damage $1,500 to $4,500, and major structural damage $4,500 to $10,000 or more. Those are ranges, not quotes. You get the exact figure in a written estimate after we inspect the car, and it lists every repair before work starts.

How much does a car detail cost?

An express wash runs $100 to $175, a standard interior $190 to $280, and a full detail inside and out $280 to $410. Paint correction costs more, at $300 to $500 for a one-step polish and $600 to $900 for a two-step correction. The low end fits a sedan. We confirm the price after we see the car.

How much does a car wrap cost?

A full color change wrap typically costs $3,000 to $4,500 on a compact car or sedan and $3,800 to $5,500 on an SUV or pickup. A hood runs $300 to $450 and a roof $350 to $550. Work vans start around $3,800. The exact price comes in writing after we inspect the vehicle.

Do you charge extra for pet hair, smoke or odor?

Sometimes, because pet hair, smoke and heavy soil take extra hours. We see the car first. You hear the number before we start. Nothing gets added to the bill at pickup.

Repairs, Collision and Insurance

A crash usually arrives with an adjuster on the phone and a car you can't drive. These answers cover what people want to know in that moment, plus a few questions about what we will and won't work on.

Do I have to use the body shop my insurance company recommends?

No. The Oregon Division of Financial Regulation states it plainly, "Oregon law prohibits an insurer from requiring you to use a certain repair shop." Your insurer can suggest a shop. Where the car gets fixed is your call. If you choose Blue Rose Auto, tell your adjuster and give us the claim number.

Do I need a body shop or a mechanic?

A mechanic fixes how the car runs, stops and steers, and a body shop fixes the panels, frame and paint after damage. After a crash you often need both, because a hit that bends a bumper can also bend a suspension part. Blue Rose Auto does mechanical repair and collision repair in the same shop, so you don't have to split the job.

How long does collision repair take?

A bumper or a single panel often takes a few days. Structural repairs can run two weeks or longer. Parts, hidden damage found once the panels come off, insurer approval of extra repairs and paint cure time all set the schedule, and we give you a time estimate with the price.

Can you match my car's factory paint?

Yes. We mix paint to your car's factory color code and blend it into the panels next to the repair, which hides the small difference between new paint and paint that has aged on the road. Pearl and three-stage colors take extra coats.

Do I have to report a crash to the Oregon DMV?

Sometimes. Oregon requires a DMV accident report within 72 hours when anyone is hurt, or when damage passes the dollar threshold in ORS 811.720, which is $2,500 today. Our written estimate tells you where your car stands. Check the current threshold with Oregon DMV when you file.

My car can't be driven after a crash. How do I get it to you?

Call 911 if anyone is hurt, or the police non-emergency line if nobody is. Then ask the tow company or your insurer's roadside service to bring the car to 3436 Olympic St, Springfield. Call us and we'll expect it.

Will servicing my car at an independent shop void my factory warranty?

No. The Federal Trade Commission says plainly, "You don't have to use the dealer for repairs or maintenance to keep your warranty in effect." Keep your receipts for oil changes and other maintenance, because the warranty company can ask for them. The exception is free warranty work, which the dealer can require you to bring to them.

Do you repair Teslas and other electric vehicles?

Yes. Blue Rose Auto is a Tesla Approved Body Shop, so we repair Tesla bodywork to Tesla's own standards, and we explain more about Tesla body repair for Eugene and Springfield owners. Other EVs and hybrids too.

Do you work on diesel trucks and vans?

Yes. We diagnose and repair diesel engines in work trucks, vans and diesel daily drivers, and handle their routine service too. Tell us what you drive when you call.

What should I do when my check engine light comes on?

If the light is steady, the car is usually safe to drive to us, but book it soon. If it is flashing, stop driving and call, because a flashing light usually means a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. Either way, we read the codes. Then we test the system, so you pay to fix the cause.

How long does a brake job take?

Most brake jobs take one to two hours once we start. Grinding when you brake usually means the pads are worn to the metal and cutting into the rotors, and driving on it turns a pad job into a pad and rotor job. We measure both and show you the worn parts.

Are your technicians certified?

Our technicians are ASE certified through the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, and Blue Rose Auto is BBB Accredited with an A+ rating. If you'd like to hear it from customers, read our Google reviews.

Do you work on RVs, boats and trailers?

We wash, detail, coat and repair RVs, boats and trailers, including travel trailers and motorhomes. Call ahead with the rig's length.

Do you replace windshields or auto glass?

No. Blue Rose Auto doesn't do auto glass or windshield replacement. If a crash cracked the windshield, a glass shop handles that part, and we take care of the body and paint.

Do I need a DEQ emissions test in Eugene or Springfield?

Oregon DEQ runs emissions testing for vehicles in the Portland and Medford areas, and Lane County isn't one of them. If you're not sure about your address, check DEQ's testing boundaries. If a check engine light is what's really bothering you, we can find out why it's on.

Detailing and Paint Correction

Most detailing questions are about time, what's included and whether the scratches will come out. Plan for a day. Paint work is priced on its own.

How long does a full detail take?

Plan on leaving the car with us for the day. An express wash goes faster, and a deep interior where the seats come out can run overnight. You get a pickup time with the quote.

What does a full detail include?

A full detail covers the inside and the outside. We vacuum, shampoo and extract the seats and carpets, wipe down the panels, vents and glass, then hand wash, clay and seal the paint. Polishing, engine bay cleaning and headlight restoration are separate steps you can add.

Do you offer mobile detailing?

No. We detail at our Olympic Street shop, where we have steady water, good light and the equipment the work needs.

Will a detail remove scratches?

A wash and detail won't remove scratches, but machine polishing can. A one-step polish lifts light swirls, haze and water spots, and a two-step correction handles heavier swirl marks after we check the clear coat. A scratch you can catch with a fingernail has usually gone through the clear coat and needs paint.

Can you get rid of mold, odors or rodent damage?

Yes. Our mold and rodent cleanup pulls out whatever is ruined, cleans and treats the rest, and goes after the source of the smell rather than covering it. Rodent jobs often turn up chewed wiring, and whether insurance covers rodents chewing wires depends on your policy.

Ceramic Coating, Film, Tint and Wraps

Film and coating questions are usually about brands, Oregon's rules and what happens if something goes wrong a year later.

Which film, wrap and coating brands do you use?

For paint protection film we install STEK, HITEK, XPEL and SunTek. Window tint comes from Geoshield, HITEK, XPEL and 3M, and our vinyl wraps use 3M and Avery Dennison film. For ceramic coating we use Ceramic Pro, System X and Gtechniq, and Blue Rose Auto is a Ceramic Pro Certified Elite Dealer.

What's the difference between ceramic coating and paint protection film?

Paint protection film is a thick clear urethane layer that takes the hit from rock chips and road debris. Ceramic coating is a thin hard layer that adds gloss, sheds water and makes washing easier, but it won't stop a chip. Many owners put film on the front of the car and coat the rest, and a coating can go right over the film.

How long does paint protection film last?

Our film installs can last up to 10 years, depending on how the car is driven and washed. It heals light swirls with warmth. It stays clear, too.

Can paint protection film or a wrap come off without damaging the paint?

Yes, when it's removed properly. Film and vinyl peel off factory paint cleanly, and the paint underneath is often in better shape than the parts that were left exposed. Removal bills at $130 to $150 an hour, and before we quote it we check the paint under the film so you know what you'll find when it comes off.

How long does a vinyl wrap last?

Plan on five years or more for a wrap that's hand washed and parked under cover some of the time. Roofs and hoods age faster than doors and sides, because they face the sun and rain head on.

Should I wrap or paint my car?

A wrap is removable vinyl over your factory paint, so it can come off before you sell the car or return a lease. A repaint changes the color for good. We recommend paint instead of a wrap when the clear coat is peeling or a panel has rust, because vinyl won't stick well to failing paint.

How dark can window tint be in Oregon?

On a car, Oregon's ORS 815.221 requires side and rear window film to let at least 50 percent of light through, with at least 35 percent through the glass and film together. Pickups and SUVs with mirrors on both sides can go darker behind the driver, and a medical exemption allows darker film too. We meter the glass after the install and hand you the certificate. Windshield film is limited to the top 6 inches, and the rest of Oregon's tint rules cover reflective and colored films.

How long does window tinting take?

Most cars take a few hours, depending on how many windows and which film. Keep the windows rolled up for a few days afterward while the film cures, then clean them with a soft cloth and an ammonia-free cleaner.

Can you tint my windshield?

Only across the top 6 inches. Oregon's ORS 815.221 limits windshield film to that strip, so it's the only part of a windshield we tint.

How do I wash a car with ceramic coating or paint protection film?

Hand wash it with a pH-neutral soap and clean microfiber towels, and skip harsh polishes and automatic brushes. That keeps a coating beading water and keeps film clear. We hand wash coated cars here too. Tell us when the coating went on.

Do you wrap or letter company vehicles?

We design and install commercial wraps and lettering on work vans, box trucks, pickups and shuttle buses, using 3M and Avery Dennison film. Send us photos of the vehicle and your logo, and we'll come back with a design and a quote.

How long will my work van be out of service for a wrap?

A car, pickup or cargo van usually takes one to two days in our bay, a Sprinter two to three days, and a box truck two to four. Fleets go one or two vehicles at a time, so the rest of your vans keep working while we wrap the first ones.

Does the Tesla approval cover paint protection film?

No. The Tesla Approved Body Shop credential covers body and structural repair. Film is separate work. On Teslas we usually install XPEL Ultimate Plus paint protection film.

Warranty on Our Work

Repairs, film, coatings and wraps carry one warranty. Window tint carries its own.

What warranty comes with your work?

Blue Rose Auto backs mechanical repair, collision repair, vinyl wraps, paint protection film and ceramic coatings for 3 years or 36,000 miles. If something we did fails inside that window, call us and bring the car back in so we can look at it under the warranty.

Is window tint covered differently?

Yes. Window tint carries a lifetime warranty on both the film and our workmanship. It's separate from our 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty.

Does the warranty cover detailing?

No. The 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty covers repairs, collision work, vinyl wraps, paint protection film and ceramic coatings. Plain detailing, paint correction, headlight restoration and engine bay cleaning aren't covered.
