Check Engine Light, Engine Repair and Engine Replacement

Engine Diagnostics and Repair

Blue Rose Auto diagnoses check engine lights and repairs and replaces engines in cars, trucks, SUVs and vans, from misfires, sensors and oil leaks to head gaskets, timing belts and engine rebuilds. Our ASE-certified technicians work at our shop at 3436 Olympic St in Springfield, Oregon, for drivers across Eugene and Lane County.

Our Engine Diagnostics and Repair Services

Blue Rose Auto repairs gas and diesel engines in cars, trucks, SUVs and vans, and diagnoses hybrids and EVs. We do not repair lawn mowers, chainsaws or other small engines. Each range on the cards is typical, and your exact quote follows our diagnosis.

01

Check Engine Light Diagnosis

We scan every module, read live data and run the test for the suspect system before we quote anything. The first 15 minutes are free, then $100 an hour, credited to an approved repair. Book a diagnostic to start.

02

Misfires, Spark Plugs and Ignition Coils

A misfiring cylinder costs you power and overheats the catalytic converter. We isolate the cylinder, then test the plug, ignition coil and injector. Plug jobs run $150 to $300 on a 4-cylinder and $250 to $500 on a V6. Spark plug cost depends on engine layout and plug access.

03

Overheating and Cooling System

Low coolant, a stuck thermostat, a weak water pump or a head gasket pushes the gauge up, and a slipping serpentine belt takes the water pump with it. We pressure test first. A serpentine belt runs $130 to $220 and a coolant flush $130 to $220. Learn what makes a car run hot.

04

Head Gasket Repair

White exhaust smoke, milky oil and coolant that keeps disappearing point at a failed head gasket. Compression and cooling pressure tests confirm it. Jobs run $1,500 to $2,800 on a 4-cylinder, $2,500 to $4,500 on a V6 and $2,200 to $3,500 on a Subaru EJ25. If the quote nears the car's value, we price a replacement beside it.

05

Timing Belt, Timing Chain and Water Pump

A belt that snaps bends valves on an interference engine, so we replace the belt and water pump together. A 4-cylinder belt job runs $700 to $1,200 and a Honda or Toyota V6 runs $1,000 to $1,500. Tell us the year and make and we confirm belt or chain.

06

Oil Leaks and Gaskets

Valve cover, oil pan and rear main seals weep oil onto the exhaust and the driveway. We find the true source before we replace a gasket. A 4-cylinder valve cover gasket runs $250 to $450. Book a leak check before a long trip.

07

Fuel System

Hard starts, hesitation and stalling trace back to a weak pump, a clogged filter or a dirty injector. We test fuel pressure before we replace a part. A fuel pump runs $700 to $1,400. Call us when the car hesitates or stalls.

08

Exhaust, Catalytic Converter and Emissions

A P0420 code points at the catalyst, yet a failing oxygen sensor or an exhaust leak reads the same on a scanner. We test the sensor first. Catalytic converter replacement runs $900 to $2,500. Learn how to spot a clogged catalytic converter.

09

Engine Mounts

A worn mount shows up as a clunk when you shift, a shudder at idle or an engine that rocks under load. We check every mount before we quote. Most jobs run $300 to $900. Book a mount check if you hear a clunk.

10

Engine Rebuild and Replacement

When testing shows internal damage, we price the repair and the replacement side by side. A used engine installed typically runs $2,500 to $4,500 and a remanufactured engine $4,000 to $6,500. Replacement costs in Oregon depend on the engine and vehicle.

11

Diesel Engines

We diagnose and repair diesel engines in trucks, vans and cars, from hard starts to a loss of power. Parts and labor vary widely by engine, so we quote after testing. Call us with the engine and the symptoms.

12

Hybrid Engines

A hybrid still has a gas engine, and we diagnose and repair it. We also diagnose EVs, which have no engine, by tracing warning lights and drivability faults with a scan tool. Bring a hybrid in for a scan or an engine repair.

Can You Keep Driving With the Check Engine Light On?

A steady check engine light on a car that drives normally can wait a few days, and a flashing one cannot. The light, also called the service engine soon light or engine warning light, means the computer stored a fault.

What you see Keep driving? What to do
Light is flashing or blinking No, stop driving Pull over when safe and call us. A misfire sends unburned fuel into the catalytic converter.
Steady light and the car drives normally Yes, for a few days Tighten the gas cap until it clicks and book a diagnostic this week.
Light came on right after you filled the tank Yes Re-seat the cap. A cap that did not seal sets an EVAP code, and the light can take a few drive cycles to clear.

Other Engine Warning Lights and Whether to Stop

Three dash lights besides the check engine light decide whether you stop at once, and each one points at a different system.

  • 5
Oil pressure light on means stop now and shut the engine off. Check the dipstick once it cools, because running without oil pressure wears out bearings fast.
  • 5
Temperature light or a gauge in the red means pull over and shut the engine off. Driving on can warp the cylinder head and fail the head gasket.
  • 5
Battery light on means the charging system stopped, usually the alternator or its belt. Drive straight to a safe stop or to us, because the car runs on battery alone until it dies.

Two lights together, such as battery and temperature, usually mean the serpentine belt slipped or broke, since that one belt turns the alternator and the water pump. Pull over and call (541) 641-8877.

A red light means stop, and an amber light means book soon.

Checking the dipstick and dash lights before a check engine light diagnostic

What to Check Before You Drive In

  • Tighten the gas cap until it clicks, because a loose cap sets the EVAP codes P0442 and P0455.
  • Check the dipstick once the engine has cooled. Low oil is a quick fix through our oil change service.
  • Note which other dash lights are on, especially oil pressure, battery and temperature.
  • Write down when it happens, whether cold start, highway speed or hard acceleration.
  • Leave the code alone. Clearing it with a scanner erases the freeze-frame data we read.

Engine Symptoms and What They Usually Mean

Knocking under load, milky oil and an overheating gauge mean stop driving now, and most other symptoms can wait a few days.

Symptom Likely cause What we check Urgency
Engine knocking, deep and worse under load Rod bearing wear, low oil pressure Oil pressure check, compression test Stop driving
Blue smoke from the exhaust Oil burning from worn valve seals or rings Oil consumption test, leak-down test Soon
Thick white smoke with a sweet smell Coolant entering the cylinders, often a head gasket Cooling system pressure test, compression test Stop driving if heavy
Milky or frothy oil on the dipstick Coolant mixing with oil, usually a head gasket Head gasket diagnosis Do not drive
Oil leak, spots under the car Valve cover, oil pan or rear main seal Leak source inspection Before a long trip
Rough idle or shaking at stops Misfire, vacuum leak, worn plugs, dirty throttle body Live data and cylinder isolation This week
Hesitation or power loss Failing ignition coil, fuel pump or clogged fuel filter Fuel pressure and ignition testing This week
Clunk on shifting, engine rocks under load Worn or broken engine mount Mount inspection under load This week
Squeal at startup, battery or temperature light Worn serpentine belt or weak tensioner Belt, tensioner and pulley inspection Soon

Common Check Engine Codes and What They Mean

A code names the system that flagged the fault, not the part that failed, so we confirm each one with live data before we replace anything.

Code What it reports Common causes How soon
P0420 Catalyst efficiency below threshold Aging catalytic converter, oxygen sensor or exhaust leak This week
P0300 Random or multiple cylinder misfire Worn plugs, failing coils, vacuum leak, fuel delivery Same day if flashing
P0301 to P0304 Misfire on cylinder 1, 2, 3 or 4 Plug, coil or injector on that cylinder Same day if flashing
P0171 Fuel mixture too lean on bank 1 Vacuum leak, dirty mass airflow sensor, weak fuel pump This week
P0335 Crankshaft position sensor circuit fault Failing crank sensor or wiring, can cause stalling Book soon

How Much Does a Check Engine Light Diagnostic Cost?

A check engine light diagnostic costs nothing for the first 15 minutes and $100 an hour after that, credited to the repair when you approve it. When we read the code, check the obvious suspects and explain the fault inside that window, you pay no diagnostic fee.

A free parts-store code read names the system that flagged a fault, and it does not name the part that failed. Our car diagnostics add live data, a road test and the specific test for the suspect system. Auto diagnostics on a hybrid or a diesel follow the same steps.

Oregon DEQ emissions testing does not cover Lane County

Lane County Has No Emissions Test to Catch a Check Engine Light

Oregon DEQ vehicle emissions testing covers only the Portland metro area and the Medford-Ashland area, and Lane County sits outside both.

  • 5
    The Portland metro requires testing
  • 5
    Medford and Ashland require testing
  • 5
Lane County, including Eugene and Springfield, is exempt

Oregon also has no periodic safety inspection, so nothing here forces an ignored light into the open. A car can run for months with the light on while a $150 sensor problem grows into a bigger repair.

Where testing does apply, DEQ says a car with the check engine light on will not pass the OBD emissions test. Oregon DEQ explains the OBD test and the light.

How an Engine Diagnostic Works Step by Step

  1. You tell us what the car is doing. We note the light, the sounds and when it happens.
  2. We scan every module. Stored and pending codes plus freeze-frame data show the conditions when the fault set.
  3. We confirm with live data. Fuel trims and sensor readings during a road test separate a diagnosis from a guess.
  4. We test the suspect system. Our ASE-certified technicians run compression, leak-down or cooling system pressure tests, whichever the evidence points at.
  5. You get the finding and the price. You hear what failed, what it costs and what can wait.
  6. We repair it when you approve. We replace nothing before then, and the repair carries our 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty.

The Tests Behind an Engine Diagnosis

We confirm a fault with a test of the suspect system, because a code points at a system and never at a failed part.

  • Scan data and freeze frame show the speed, load and temperature when the fault set, which tells us what to test next.
  • A smoke test pushes visible smoke through the intake or EVAP system and shows the vacuum and EVAP leaks behind lean and EVAP codes.
  • Compression and leak-down tests show whether valves, rings or the head gasket lose cylinder pressure, which a code never reports.
  • A cooling system pressure test finds a coolant leak that only shows when the system is hot and under pressure.
  • A fuel pressure test separates a weak pump from a clogged filter or a dirty injector.

Every Repair Backed by 3 Years or 36,000 Miles

Our repairs carry a 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty. If a part or repair we did fails inside that window, you bring the car back and we make it right.

Repair, Rebuild or Replace the Engine

Repair the engine when one failed part is the cause, and replace it when internal damage costs more to fix than the engine is worth. Compression and leak-down testing show whether the problem sits in the valves, the rings or the head gasket, and that result decides it.

A used engine from salvage costs least and typically carries 30 to 90 days of seller coverage. An engine rebuild machines the block and reassembles it with new wear parts. A remanufactured engine is rebuilt to factory specifications, and units often carry three years of coverage.

A head gasket on an otherwise sound car is usually worth repairing. When one repair costs more than half of what the car is worth, we lay out the replacement price next to it and you choose.

As an example only, not a quote, a car worth $8,000 with a $3,000 Subaru EJ25 head gasket job is well under half its value, so repair makes sense. A car worth $4,000 facing a $4,000 remanufactured engine is not, and we price a used engine beside it before you choose.

If another shop told you the engine is finished, a second diagnostic can confirm or rule out a quote that size before you approve it.

Engine Diagnostics and Repair Questions

What does the check engine light mean?

The check engine light, also called the service engine soon light or engine warning light, means the OBD-II computer stored a fault because a sensor read outside its normal range. The cause runs from a loose gas cap to an active misfire.

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?

A steady light on a car that drives normally can wait a few days for an appointment. A flashing or blinking light means an active misfire, so pull over when it is safe and bring the car in the same day.

Does a flashing check engine light turn off on its own?

Sometimes it stops flashing and stays on, because the misfire eases when the load drops. The fault stays stored and the catalytic converter stays at risk, so book a diagnosis the same week.

Can low oil cause the check engine light to flash?

In some engines, yes. Variable valve timing runs on oil pressure, so a low oil level can set timing codes and rough running. If the oil pressure light is on too, shut the engine off and check the dipstick once it cools.

Why is my check engine light flashing when the car runs fine?

One cylinder can misfire lightly while the car still feels normal, and the computer flashes the light because unburned fuel is reaching the catalytic converter. Treat it as urgent.

Does Eugene or Lane County have emissions testing?

No. Oregon DEQ vehicle emissions testing covers the Portland metro area and the Medford-Ashland area, and Lane County, including Eugene and Springfield, sits outside both. Oregon also has no periodic safety inspection.

Does a lit check engine light fail an Oregon DEQ test?

Yes, where testing applies. DEQ states that a car with the check engine light on will not pass the OBD test, which covers 1996 and newer gasoline vehicles. Fix the cause first and the light can go out before the test.

How often should I run an engine diagnostic?

At least once a year, and any time a warning light, rough idle, stalling or poor mileage shows up. A yearly check catches a failing sensor or coil before it strands you.

Can bad sensors cause a rough idle?

Yes. A failing oxygen sensor or mass airflow sensor sends bad data, so the computer mixes the wrong amount of fuel and the engine idles rough. Live data shows which one reads wrong.

Does engine overheating need immediate attention?

Yes. Pull over and shut the engine off when the gauge reaches the red, because driving on can warp the head and fail the head gasket. Check coolant only once the engine has cooled. The usual causes of a car running hot start with low coolant and a weak water pump.

Should I repair or replace my engine?

Compression and leak-down testing decide it. A head gasket on a sound car is usually worth repairing, while internal damage on a high-mileage car often is not. We quote both so you can compare.

Will insurance pay for an engine repair or replacement?

Standard auto insurance generally covers collisions and other covered losses, not mechanical failure, so a worn engine usually falls outside it. A mechanical breakdown or extended warranty plan may cover the job, so ask its administrator first.

Where can I get a car diagnostic near me in Springfield or Eugene?

Blue Rose Auto diagnoses cars at 3436 Olympic St in Springfield, about 15 minutes from downtown Eugene on I-105 east. The first 15 minutes are free.

Blue Rose worked on my diesel engine VW Touareg, a pretty major repair that my dealership had estimated for $1000 more. Justin and the crew at Blue Rose were very responsive and got me on their schedule immediately. When they ran into issues with finding parts, they quickly adapted to keep the project moving forward. They even provided me with round trip shuttle service and my car was returned squeaky clean and running smoothly.
